Seven Common Mistakes Everyone Makes In Water Damage Restoration

When a person has endured water damage to their home they are going to need water damage restoration to fix the damage. Most people do not know too much about water damage restoration. These are seven common mistakes that people make when it comes to water damage. If a person knows the errors of others they can avoid them.

  • The Cause of the Damage

A person may go to work fixing the damage from the water and that is good. They need to address the cause of the water damage. If they do not address the cause this can lead to additional flooding and more damage in the future. A person needs to address any leaking pipes or other issues that are leading to damage. This will keep them from making additional repairs and spending more money on these repairs.

  • Using Poor Quality Materials

Some things are worth paying a little bit more for. While most people look to save money everywhere they can there are some things they need to pay a little extra for. This includes the parts to fix water damage. Cheaper parts may not hold up and can lead to additional parts for repair in the future. A person should go for quality parts when it comes to repairing water damage.

  • Improper Blending

If a person repairs the ceiling or even the walls from water damage they may not be able to blend the colors perfectly. There may be an unsightly area that does not even look close to the original structure. There are different textures and different colors. A person will need to take the time to blend the materials so they do not stand out. If a person cannot handle the blending on their own they should call a professional to repair it.

  • Hiring the Wrong Person for the Repair

A person should take the time to find the right person for the repair job. They should look for recommendations and check out the company online. A person should always ask about their experience, licensing, insurance, and ask for references. They should get a warranty on their work. A person also needs to know their skill limits. While they may be able to fix some things on their own they should know when to call in a professional.

  • Cleaning in a Hazardous Area

Before a person attempts to clean things up they need to make sure that the area is safe. If the wiring is still on this can lead to electrical shocks. The floor may be unstable. There can be sanitation issues from toxins in the water and damaged septic systems. A person needs to check for these and other safety measures before they begin the restoration.

  • Waiting too Long

The first 48 hours are the most important. If the home is completely submerged in the water this can lead to damage. It can also damage wiring, plumbing, and gas lines. The HVAC system can become damaged. The structure, the floors, and the ceiling can also become damaged. A person should not wait and take measures to remove the water immediately.

  • Using the Wrong Equipment

A person needs more than just mops and brooms to clean up after a floor. They may need a sub-pump and high powered dryers. Professionals have all of the right equipment and they can have the water out of the home in a matter of minutes.

These are some mistakes to avoid when facing damage to the home. The faster a person acts the less mess they will have to clean up.
